Located
in the Craftsman's Valley area of the Dollywood Theme Park, the
Robert F. Thomas Chapel is dedicated to the memory of the man,
who for more than 50 years was both minister and doctor to the
people of Sevier County, Tennessee. Dr. Thomas brought Dolly
Parton and several of her family members into the world.
He ministered in local churches until his passing in 1981.
Today the church which bears his name, holds regular Sunday services
and special candlelight services during the Christmas festivities
at Dollywood.
Within
my painting are several symbolic elements. Three white doves
rising over the steeple represent the Holy Trinity and the Resurrection.
The flowers surrounding the chapel are for the changing seasons
here in the Smokies. Beginning with the sacred dogwoods
of spring, the sunflowers of summer, the corn and pumpkins for
the bountiful harvest of fall, and the deep rich red and greens
of Christmas. Lastly, the small clump of mistletoe in the
lower right is symbolic of Dolly Parton's love for the people
and place of this, her Tennessee mountain home.
